A PROFESSIONAL’S GUIDE TO WINTER LANDSCAPE CARE

Ensure the Health of your Plants this Winter with the Assistance of our Landscape Designer

Just because the warm season is drawing to a close, doesn’t mean you can stop paying attention to your landscape. Quite the contrary! It’s imperative that you continue to care for your property throughout the coming winter months.

Keeping this in mind, our team has developed a brief guide to help local residents safeguard their plants once temperatures begin to drop. We urge you to browse the following tips and tricks! At Breath of Spring, we make it easier than ever to ensure the health and wellbeing of your landscape all year long.

Be Sure to Apply Mulch

As they say, mulch, mulch, mulch! Apply mulch around your trees and shrubs to protect your plants against harsh wintertime conditions. This way, you’ll be able to reduce the threat of erosion and water loss. A 2-inch layer of mulch will also help to maintain healthy soil temperatures.

Pruning is Paramount

It’s recommended that you prune your plants all throughout the winter season. This way, freshly pruned areas will be exposed to exterior conditions for just a short period prior to the start of the new growth season.

Eliminate the Threat of Water Loss

By applying an anti-transpirant to plants and trees, you’ll be able to reduce the negative effects of water loss. Our team recommends that you take extra care to preserve your evergreens. You may also choose to administer burlap wrapping throughout your landscape to shield your plants against high winds and salt spray.

Prepare for Snow & Ice

In order to reduce the threat of snow showers, we recommend that you tie branches together that may not be able to shoulder heavy snow loads. On top of that, it’s important that you eliminate snow from low-hanging branches. Remove the snow by gently brushing it away from the tree, rather than shaking individual limbs, which may cause certain branches to splinter.

Wire Mesh? Why Not!

You may choose to apply wire mesh around the base of young trees. This application will protect your trees against the gnawing teeth of local wildlife.
